State-Title-Winning Coach Still Stung By Firing

John Gross, who led the Richwoods (Ill.) girls basketball team to the Class 3A state title last season, was fired by the school on Oct. 15. The school district had asked him to do a criminal background check in September and found a felony conviction for a domestic battery incident in 1996. Gross completed alcohol rehabilitation and served a 30-day jail sentence.
