Kelvin Sampson Joins Houston Rockets' Staff
Former Oklahoma head basketball coach Kelvin Sampson will have a new team -- that is once the NBA lockout is over.
Sampson is set to join the Houston Rockets as an assistant on new head coach Kevin McHale's staff, a source told the Associated Press. McHale was hired last month to replace Rick Adelman who was fired after four seasons.
Sampson was interviewed for the Rockets' head coaching job and was thought to also be a candidate for the vacancies in Detroit and now in Minnesota, where Kurt Rambis was fired Tuesday.
Sampson had spent the past three seasons as an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks. He coached at OU from 1994 to 2006 before an NCAA investigation cast a shadow on the program. He left the Sooners in March 2006 to become head coach at Indiana.
He was forced to resign with the Hoosiers less than two years later after additional allegations of NCAA violations surfaced. The NCAA imposed a five-year ban on Sampson from coaching in the NCAA.
