Brad Greenberg Steps Down As Radford Men's Coach
RADFORD – Brad Greenberg ended speculation on how his term as Radford University basketball coach would end when he quit late Thursday afternoon.
The university was terse in its announcement of the resignation. Greenberg had been under fire since late fall when the university learned of NCAA violations related to improper benefits for an ineligible player.
Greenberg then admitted to the violations involving Masse Doumbe, a French native and a transfer from a U.S. junior college.
The university announced late Thursday that a national search for its seventh head basketball coach would begin immediately.
“I’m confident this position will generate a lot of interest from a deep pool of candidates,” athletic director Robert Lineburg said. “Radford University is a terrific institution and we are committed to hiring the right individual to lead our program. I’m not going to put a timetable on the search.”
Lineburg said he would have no further comment about the coaching situation until a hire is made. He also said that he had no comment about the continuing NCAA investigation.
Greenberg, 57, was suspended by the university in February for the last four games of the season. He finished with a 52-68 career record at Radford. His best season was in 2009-10 when the Highlanders finished 21-12 and won the Big South Conference regular season and tournament titles and earned an NCAA tournament berth.
Greenberg was subsequently named conference coach of the year and awarded a new contract. This year the Highlanders finished 5-24 and failed to reach the conference tournament for the first time.
